Behind The Scenes

Entering your new office for the first time as an employee instead of an applicant brings a different kind of excitement. On the flip side, feelings of uncertainty may also rear its ugly head in the face of a new chapter in one’s professional life.

In this interview, Daphnee sat down with one of RareJob’s newer employees, Regine Marie Mallari from the Material Department. Learn more about her experience transitioning from applicant to employee, and all about the beginning of her RareJob Journey!

You are one of RareJob’s newer hires this year; when did you officially start?

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

I started my career as an early childhood educator. I taught as a grade school teacher at St. Paul College Pasig for three years and two years as a preschool teacher. I also had a short stint as an offline English teacher to Japanese students. With my experience in teaching language arts, I was given the opportunity to write a textbook for grade school students. After five years in teaching, I eventually decided to take a break and pursue a career in writing. RareJob opened that opportunity for me and I started working under the Material Production Unit 1 of the Material Department last August 27, 2019.

During the time you were job hunting, what made RareJob stand out as a potential employer?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

My job hunting during that time was challenging since it was my first time looking for a writing position, and I was repeatedly turned down because my past experiences were mostly about teaching. Despite the rejection, I continued my search, until I came across RareJob’s ad on a career site. I went over the list of qualifications and the job description, then I felt that the job posting matched with my previous experiences and future career goals. Also, the perks and benefits were a huge plus! So, I turned in my application and RareJob opened the opportunity for me to explore a new career path.

Some applicants get nervous before, and even during, the application process. How was your job application experience during your assessment period?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

I felt anxious at first but it was lessened as soon I stepped into the office. I found the environment warm and cozy. Also, every step in the application process was clearly explained to me. I did not have to worry about what will happen next.

You were also able to talk to your then future colleagues and superiors; how was that experience?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

They asked me different types of questions! It was definitely challenging, but it helped me get a glimpse of what the job will essentially require of me. Right now that I’m actually working with them, I understand why that step was crucial and necessary.

The Rising Action

Currently, you are holding the Junior ESL Content Developer position. Can you tell me a bit about it?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

As a Junior ESL Content Developer, I am responsible for developing content, which involves writing, editing, and revising ESL materials that our students use. As a team member of Material Production, I am also expected to provide support in the research and development of new programs.

Based on your previous experience, this is not your first time working with lesson creation; how different is creating modules for online classes compared to writing textbooks for classroom use?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

The skills needed to write both are essentially the same. However, creating modules for online classes requires flexibility and a clear understanding of second language acquisition.

avatar

Daph

Human Resources

How fascinating! Can you expound more on how they differ from each other?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

Well, the skills needed to write both are essentially the same, but flexibility is required in creating modules for online classes since we cater to different types of learners with varied goals for learning the English language.

Another difference is that creating online modules requires knowledge of basic principles and common practices used in teaching a second language. Thankfully, I received training for these from my department, which equipped me with relevant knowledge and skills that are useful in writing for ESL learners.

I understand that you’ve been with us for only a couple of months; how have your colleagues and superiors helped you so far with adjusting to the new company, and even your new tasks?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

I deeply appreciate how supportive and helpful my colleagues and superiors are. Other than the initial trainings they provide, they are always ready to extend help and share tips on how I can accomplish my tasks effectively.

What challenges have you encountered?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

One challenge I encountered is transitioning from teaching to writing. I am no longer the teacher who receives the material who can choose to use it or not; instead, I am now the person behind the module, and I try my best as I know how important good materials are in facilitating learning. Because of this, I need to constantly update my knowledge and skills in writing and align my strategies with the standards set by the department.

Another challenge I have encountered isn’t really from my job: traveling from Pasig to get to work! Since the LRT2 broke down, I either leave my place earlier and use an alternate route or ride a carpool with other people working in Quezon City

After a few months in RareJob, have you found more to love about the company?

avatar

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

I really love how my colleagues support each other and treat each other like family. In my first few weeks here, I did not feel awkward or out of place. Their warm welcome calmed my anxious spirit. It was definitely a good way to start a new journey.

More importantly, I love how RareJob gave me the chance to fulfill my career goals and help me realize them. The company is true to its vision, indeed, it gives chances to everyone, everywhere.

Let’s go back to your experience as an applicant. A lot of others are currently in the boat you were in back then, and though not all, some of them may be feeling nervous and unsure. What can you share, based on your own application experience, to encourage these potential talents?

Reg

Junior ESL Content Developer

Searching for the job that’s right for us can be nerve-wracking and frustrating. However, I encourage you to keep trying and keep taking chances. Take a chance, even if you’re anxious. Take a chance, even if you failed at your first try. Take a chance, even if you’re a fresh graduate. Take a chance, even if you’ve been rejected before.

It is only when we try and take chances that we begin to see things that are meant for us. We all have our if’s and but’s, but when we overcome them, that’s when we stand a chance to find the job that’s good for us.

I have tried and taken that chance. Will you take yours or let it pass?
